A Mathematical Bucket List

There are a million fun things to do outside when you’re a child, aren't there?  Maybe more. But where do you start? Inspired by the list of 100 things every kid absolutely has to do before they’re 12, I've composed a Mathematical themed Bucket List.  It's full of ideas for enhancing young children’s mathematical experiences.

Here's a snap shot of these SIMPLE ideas...There are lots more to DOWNLOAD for FREE. Read on...

  • BAKE! Share the bake equally between family members. Are there enough?

  • Journey/ Time Stick.  A brilliant way to start exploring and recording time for wee ones! Days of the week/ routines.  Lots of mathematical language and rich discussion... even positional language. You can gather objects to attach to a stick on a single summer adventure or collect objects over the course of the holidays and attach sequentially.

  • WATER BEADS. Investigate how long they’ll take to grow in a variety of different sized containers… Or how much water they will need to grow. Once grown you could use them for sorting and  classification. Rank them into lines of different colours. Can you make a stripy triangle that contains one pink water bead or two blue water beads?

  • PLAY AT LEAST ONE BOARD GAME AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN!
Have you tried our SUBITISING SPOTS or our RED TASKS (Reception/ Nursery or P1 ) Did you know you there is a DOWNLOADABLE version too?   Or find a dice and make up your own games!

  • OUTDOOR SUBITISING. Improving children’s ability to know ‘how many’ without counting.Make sure to look down at your feet when you are at the local park or out in a back garden. What do you see? How do you see it? You could also make a fold up quadrant on your outdoor adventures. Make a simple quadrant with paper or wood.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on A MATHEMATICAL SUMMER BUCKET LIST. Which ideas resonate with you? What would you add/ subtract?  All views are welcome - post in the comments.

Thank you for all you do to support your children's number journey. Thank you for watching and listening.
